Justin Duance

Justin Duance is a contemporary jeweller based in Newlyn, Cornwall. He specialises in precious jewellery that is sand cast using beach sand from locations throughout the world.

Justin originally gained a degree in jewellery and silversmithing at the Sir John Cass Faculty of Art in 2000. Shortly afterwards he moved back home to Cornwall to build up his jewellery workshop which is now based in a restored pumphouse.

A keen surfer, Justin’s silver and gold jewellery is deeply influenced by the surrounding countryside and the ocean; each piece subtly changing with wear in the same way that the sea shapes a coastline. His business aims to be as environmentally friendly as possible, with 95% of metals used being either recycled or Fairtrade.

Watermark Gallery is delighted to stock a bespoke collection of sand cast rings by Justin Duance, all of which are unique and made specially to order. Sandcasting involves molten metal (gold or silver) being poured into a mould filled with sand, which gives the resulting piece an unusual and organic texture. Although the sand used in the collection shown is from Sennen and Carbis Bay in St Ives, Cornwall, Justin has a collection of sand from throughout the UK, including many locations on the North Yorkshire coast. Customers are also welcome to send in their own sand which can be used in the casting process.
