What you need to know
This course is limited to just 6 places and is suitable for all levels of experience, particularly those who want to use colour more effectively. The full workshop takes place over two days plus an evening lecture the night before the course. However, it is also possible to book a single day and attend the lecture (either date) if time is limited.
Working from simple studio still-lives you will be taught how to mix and apply colour to achieve harmony in a painting. The art of coordinating colour relationships is key to making a picture work. You will go through a process of development starting with smaller colour studies before embarking on a final piece. Demonstrations will be given at each stage.
Friday Evening: 7 - 8.30pm
This friendly weekend workshop begins on the Friday evening with drinks and an introductory illustrated talk by your tutor, Colin Black. Colin will look at the work of Giorgio Morandi, Paul Cezanne and Euan Uglow. He will also include some of his own work explaining how colour is used to create mood.
Saturday (Day One): 10am - 4pm
On the first day you will begin by learning how to mix a colour palette in response to the studio still lives. Playing with colour is key to understanding how colour works and producing a series of compositional studies will help you see how different moods can be created. A bit of colour theory will also be taught alongside the practical implications
Sunday (Day Two): 10am - 4pm
On the second day you will produce a final piece based on your initial studies. Learning to build up a rich surface through layers of colour will give your picture depth and the important ingredient of coordinating colour. Group discussion and personal tuition will be part of the learning process throughout
